Our story
SANRIKU SEA
The Sanriku Coast is well-known as one of three major fishing grounds in the world. Eddies are generated in the Sanriku costal area, where the Oyashio Current, a cold current rich in nutrients, collides with the Kuroshio Current, a warm current coming from the south. As a result, large amounts of plankton are produced. Then, the plankton is eaten by small fish, and the small fish are eaten by a wide variety of larger fish, including saury, bonito, and mackerel. In this way, a fishing ground is formed in the area.
Kesennuma city is located at the northeastern end of Miyagi Prefecture, facing the Sanriku Coast, which extends from Aomori Prefecture through Iwate and Miyagi Prefectures.
Kesennuma City
There are various fishing industries, from shipbuilding to seafood processing. This area has one of the famous fishing ports in Japan, the Kesennuma Fishing Port. Enjoying the benefits from a dendritic ria coastline, the Sanriku Coast is famous for aquaculture industries, mainly producing seaweed, such as wakame and mekabu, and oysters.
Benefits from mountains leading to the blessings of the sea
The blessings of the sea originate from a number of mountains and forests in the Sanriku coastal areas. The forests create mineral and nutrient-rich water; the water flows to rivers, then to the sea. Thus, this region creates a suitable environment where high-quality fish and seaweeds can grow.
Enjoy the blessings from Sanriku Sea
By offering products of Sanriku Bay, we wish to help people enjoy delicious meals at home. We select fresh and high-quality ingredients as well as develop market-informed products in response to various food cultures and regulations of each country. We also consider protecting the marine environment in order to create products using farm-raised wakame and mekabu seaweed.
Initiatives
To protect and nurture the rich marine resources in Sanriku Sea and pass them on to future generations, our company is making a lot of efforts, including local resource conservation.
1 / Carbon offset
Our production depends on the marine environment, so we have been implementing carbon-offset initiatives to allocate environmental preservation costs based on product purchases. We contribute to local activities for preserving forests by donating a part of the sales of specific products.
2 / Tree-planting initiatives
Since 2021, we have been planting trees in the forests in Tome City, Miyagi Prefecture. Our company has been conducting carbon-offset and tree-planting initiatives. In October 2023, we received the Excellence Award (Forestry Agency Director General’s Award) for “Forestry x Decarbonization Challenge.” This award is given to a company contributing to the achievement of a decarbonized society by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
3 / Raising environmental conservation awareness
We monitor the total power generation on a daily basis and share it with all employees, aiming to raise awareness of environmental conservation within the company.
4 / Bottle cap recycling activities (Eco-cap activities)
Since 2016, we have been collecting PET bottle caps, and to date, 108,939 caps have been collected. By donating caps to recycling manufacturers, we are participating in activities to provide vaccines to children around the world.
